Dear Death
So often, we don’t see you coming. It’s like waking up to silent snow. You open your blinds and the world outside is covered, white.
No rumble heard. No roaring in the night. Just a quiet arrival.
No excuses. No explanation.
Although we know, deep down in our hearts, you inevitably will come dear Death. We don’t look forward to your arrival. In fact, most of the time we, ‘touch wood,’ don’t even want to think your name. Much less utter it out loud. Dear Death.
So, then I ask you dear Death, if, like an uninvited guest, you pitch up at the front door, sometimes the back, why? What are we, who stay ‘behind,’ what are we to ‘learn’ from your visit. As it leaves us feeling hollow, empty, numb, inconsolable and grateful. That just for today it isn’t, it wasn’t us. A silent scream.
Dear Death, are you the one that connects us all? Ringing the reminder bell that if not today, perhaps tomorrow, or the next. But come, you will.
Dear Death, are you the golden thread running through each and everyone's veins?
Dear Death?
